A suggested framework for navigating employment on individuals with ASD

A recent article published at the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, by Yael Goldfarb, Eynat Gal (Department of Occupational Therapy, University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel) and Ofer Golan (Department of Psychology, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel) notes that, for persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), successfully having a job “poses a central challenge upon entering adulthood”, since employment plays a fundamental role in adulthood.

Their research comments on “the often-advocated practice of matching adults with ASD with job opportunities that correspond with their special interest areas”, pointing out that such matches could be more complicated that what meets the eye. On such, they propose Self Determination Theory of Motivation (SDT) as a suggested framework for navigating employment on individuals with ASD. SDT could be a useful tool for understanding the needs of autistic individuals. it is worth reviewing their proposals.

While the world and society are becoming more aware of individuals with ASD, and with its origins still to be discovered, there are currently tools and treatments to improve the quality of life of individuals with autism, e.g., stem cell therapy provides patients with autism spectrum disorder a remarkable improvement in most cases.
